Tokyo elects first ever female Governor

Japan’s former defence minister Yuriko Koike (64) has been elected the first ever woman Governor of Japan’s capital Tokyo. Koike, a member of PM Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party, ran as an independent and won by over a million votes. This comes after two Tokyo Governors resigned over scandals linked to the city’s preparations to host the 2020 Olympics.
